Spousal Sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the option to sponsor their significant other through either an inland or outland sponsorship application, each with its own merits.

It’s important to note that the income threshold (LICO) does not apply to spousal sponsorship.

Dependent Sponsorship

You can sponsor your partner to Canada if both of you are currently

  • Married
  • In common-law relationship for a period of at least 12 consecutive months or
  • Has been in a conjugal relationship with their partner for a period of at least 12 consecutive months

You can sponsor your own parents & grandparents if you are:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Residing in Canada
  • Meet the minimum necessary income level

You can sponsor a dependent child (biological and adapted) if:

  • The sponsor is at least 18 years old
  • The sponsor is residing in Canada
  • The sponsor is not receiving social assistance
  • The sponsor can provide basic needs for the person sponsored
  • The sponsored child is under 22 years of age and not a spouse or common-law partner

You can sponsor relatives like a brother, sister, aunt, or uncle in very specific situations.

I. Orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild

  • You can sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild only under certain criteria.

II. Other Relatives

You can sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age, only under certain criteria.
