The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is an expedited study permit processing program for those who are applying to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI).

Students are qualified for this SDS stream if they are residing in:

  • China
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • India
  • Morocco
  • Pakistan
  • Peru
  • Philippines
  • Senegal
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Vietnam

The Non-Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a general visa application process for temporary residence to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI).

It is open to all international students irrespective of country of origin.

• Less Documentation: Under the SDS process of application, the candidate is required to submit less documents to prove their financial eligibility compared to the Non-SDS approach.
  
  
• Fast Process: SDS process of application is efficient and simple as compared to the Non-SDS process. IRCC processes most SDS applications within 20 calendar days if the student meets the eligibility requirements.

Holders of open work permit do not have any restrictions on when they want to change employments.
Some types of Open Work Permit are:

• Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP)
• Spouse of a student Open Work Permit (C42)
• Spouse of a Skilled Worker Open Work Permit (C41)
• IEC (International Experience Canada)
• Bridging Open Work Permits
• Temporary resident permit holder
• Destitute student
• Refugee, refugee claimant, protected person, or their family members.

In each of these situations, you must meet additional criteria to be eligible.

Holders can only work according to the conditions on their work permit, which include:

• The name of the employer they can work for
• How long they can work
• The location where they can work (if applicable)

Most common among the employer-specific work permits are:

• LMIA based Work Permit
• Intra-company transfer (ICT) Work Permit
• Global Talent Stream
